So I want to share some stories of 5 different self-employed Nairobians that I met about the year ago and reconnected recently. These micro level cases may give you some more ideas about Nairobian’s lifestyle.

1. Mr. S
S used to work for the Nairobi Stock Exchange, but started to do his own delivery service for small businesses. He now works with the newly-opened burger joint food truck inside Nairobi’s hottest hangout place and plans to offer them a delivery service for them near future. So now he is saving while applying for some grant/loan opportunities for young entrepreneurs. While President Uhuru Kenyatta has recently signed a bill that caps commercial bank lending at 4 percentage points above the central bank’s benchmark rate, which is currently 10.5%, it is unlikely that the bank lending will be an attractive option for small entrepreneurs like Mr. S. Nontheless I can see this hardworking young man will make his way up!

2. Ms. H
H is a make-up artist but she is also an artist and jewelry designer. When I met her last year, she was just starting her jewelry business more or less as a side business, but she now has her own shop/atelier, and now her jewelry business makes up her major part of her income. She’s mostly creating affordable jewelry lines manipulating metals, beads, and fabrics for local markets. But she also recently began working on upcycling jewelry line using discarded plastic materials. This art of recycling, in general, has a good potential in the creative sector here. When done well, I believe that the art of recycling/upcycling could be an interesting identity that Kenyan creators can promote.

3. Mr. M
M is a talented graphic designer and an aspiring brand owner. He has now moved to a new studio where he plans to co-locate a multibrand retail shop that sells multiple Made-in-Kenya / Made-for-Kenya brands. He’s also been working hard to find the right manufacturers that can produce quality garments for his new urban clothing line, which is not an easy task. He is also about to launch a collaboration product with one of the successful Made-in-Kenya bag brands which have multiple retail locations across Nairobi. As a well-connected and active person in the creative sector, he sees that more and more young people are seeing potential in the creative work done locally and he seems to be happy to be the role model for the next generation of the creative youth.

去年出会った自営業・起業家のナイロビ人たち、1年経ってそれぞれいろいろな変化があったみたいです。普通の（？）ナイロビ人のライフスタイルをちょっと感じてもらえるといいのですが。。

1. Mr. S
Sは、以前ナイロビ証券取引所で働いていて、スモールビジネス向けに書類や郵便物などのデリバリーのサービスをやっていました。今は今ナイロビで注目スポット内にある、新しいバーガーショップのフードトラックで働きつつ、将来的にはこういったレストランと提携したデリバリーサービスを開始する準備をすすめているようです。具体的には、バイクなどの必要なインフラ整備のための投資に向けた貯蓄、各種起業家向けのグラントやローンなどのオプションをそれぞれ開拓しています。ウフル・ケニヤッタ大統領が、先月、銀行の融資利率を公定歩合（現在10.5%）から最大4パーセントポイントまでにするというキャップを設ける法案にサインしたことで、ちょっと盛り上がっていますが、実際はクレジットリスクプロファイルの高い彼らのような小さな会社が銀行ローンを受けるのは簡単ではなさそうです。でも彼のような、計画性があって働き者の人物は、コツコツを拡大していく気がします。

2. Ms. H
Hはメークアップアーティストとして生計をたてつつ、ジュエリーデザイナーやアーティストとして活動していました。昨年会ったときは、ジュエリービジネスはサイドビジネスでしたが、今はショップ兼アトリエの場所をオープンしていて、ジュエリービジネスが生計の半分以上を占め、拡大しているということでした。現在は、おもにローカル市場向けて、メタル、ビーズ、と布などを組み合わせたお手頃価格のジュエリーを作成していますが、最近はリサイクルプラスチックなどを活用した商品も開発しているようです。このリサイクルアート系の動きは、クリエイティブセクターにおいて、一般的にも可能性がある動きかと思います。うまく組み合わせることで、ケニアのクリエイティブセクターを特徴付ける武器になりうるのではないかとも密かに思っています。

3. Mr. M
Mは才能あるグラフィックデザイナーで、同時にケニアブランドの構築も進めています。去年の場所から新しいスタジオに移動し、その場所を今後はメイドインケニア・メイドフォーケニアのブランドを集めたショップにしていこうという構想もあるようです。少しずつ展開している自身のアパレルブランドで高品質の商品を販売するために、日々いろいろとメーカー探しに奔走しています（実際情報も少なく、オプションも少ないなかからメーカーを探すのは難しい）。一方、ケニアで成功していて、ナイロビの主要モールにショップを構えるメイドインケニアのバッグブランドとのコラボレーションの商品もロンチ予定のこと。クリエイティブセクターの中心にいる人物として、少しずつ若者がクリエイティブセクターに可能性や関心を持っているうねりを感じているようで、ロールモデルとして活き活きとしている感じでした。
